We understand that our role as your dental team is changing and is no longer a case of a brief check-up every six months.

By establishing the smile school our aim is to move towards a more interactive service helping young families develop healthy teeth and gums through advisory support for parents and fun, interactive education for the new generations.

The Smile School is also a community project. Our Dental Therapist, Olivia Burrows and Practice Manager Donna Leggett, have visited schools and nurseries extending this dental education to hundreds of local children. These complimentary sessions have proven to be very popular with the children who are also provided with a Dental Health Pack to take home which include a toothbrush, timer, tooth brushing wall chart and information leaflets for parents.

Birth to 4 years

For our youngest visitors the smile school can help parents through teething and provide support on how to care for a babies first few teeth. We will also advise and provide literature on bottle-feeding, weaning and healthy drinks and snacks.

4 to 8 years

As your child grows we can help reinforce the advice given to parents in earlier years with colourful games and displays so that the child can begin to make the healthy choices themselves.

This is also the age to develop confidence in visiting the dental chair for a dental health assessment and to receive preventive care such as fissure sealants and fluoride vanishes.

8 to 16 years

The increasing independence of these years brings a different challenge for parents and the dental team. Regular monitoring for early decay and intensive diet advice will be supported by on-going preventive care.

Sport injuries become more common as school and clubs take up more of your family’s time. Suitable mouth guards will be custom made and the intake of sugary sports drinks monitored.

The oldest members of the Smile School can also be educated about the health risks of alcohol and smoking to the mouth – should the parents request it.

To arrange a session at our smile school or if you are a school or nursery interested in arranging a visit please send an enquiry to the practice.

Mrs T at Boundry Oak School

I would just like to send a huge thank you to you and Mrs Burrows for a fantastic visit to Park Gate Primary last Wednesday. The children really engaged with Mrs Burrow’s resources and they were full of facts by the end. Thank you also for the brilliant dental packs that you gave them, they have been timing away!

The children really benefitted from the experience and I hope we can do it again in the future.”
